These Empty Streets in Hongcun (宏村, pinyin: Hóngcūn). Hongcun is a village in Yixian country, Anhui province, located near the southwest slope of Mount Huangshan in China.
This image is displayed in monochrome to hopefully emphasize the architectonics of the buildings. The architecture and carvings of the approximately 150 residences dating back in Ming and Qing dynasties are said to be among the best of their kind in China. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Hong Cun was one of the location where the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was shot.
Since then, tourism has dramatically increased. From a local population of hundreds, it could easily rise to tens of thousands during day time due to tourism. There are no overnight facilities for tourists in order to give the locals some sense of normalcy. However, if you approach the locals tactfully, they might just be willing to let you stay in their spare room for a nominal fee. How was i able to capture these empty streets otherwise………
